STATE-
MENT

Manuel A. Hernandez R. has developed a practice surrounding the understanding, dissection and search for what is human, in which ways does it manifest, register and leave traces along the passage of time. His work has used images as the primary source material for approaching the intimate and public spheres intertwining with the domestic and intimate as well as the collective and popular.

He understands images as artificial creations that linger on every aspect of the human experience. This expiring material with static appearance has plastic and malleable properties that can be found once its original qualities, such as context, colour, medium or format, are altered. By these means, new meanings and interpretations sprout from existing materials that have been appropriated and reinterpreted for the sake of understanding and exploring aspects of the experience of being human.

Hernandez´s body of wok has used a variety of mediums and techniques with the pursuit of continuously translating and transcribing existing information, nurturing a naive curiosity that does not pretend to find certainty or answers. He uses reinterpretation as a mechanism to generate new narratives and relations between the appropriated material and the created one.
